Oscar Corona’s Arcoíris explores themes of queer melancholy through the symbolism of the rainbow, which has historically served as both an omnipotent object of desire and a metaphorical representation of queer identity. The installation incorporates scenic elements and video works that reinterpret and expand queer subjectivities through embodiment, caricature, textures, and spoken word, offering a contemporary take on queer identity, sexuality, and their evolution.

The ultimate aim of Arcoíris, originally created during Corona’s MFA at ArtCenter College of Design, is to update the queer art canon from their unique perspective as a queer, Latinx, non-binary artist, challenging stereotypes traditionally associated with gay, assigned male at birth (AMAB) individuals in the artistic and queer community.

Arcoíris will be on view at Circus of Books from October 1-31, 2024. Visiting hours are Monday-Wednesday 11-8 p.m. and Thursday-Sunday 11-11 p.m.

The opening reception for this exhibition will take place at Circus of Books on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, from 7-8:30 p.m.

Oscar Corona is a Los Angeles-based interdisciplinary artist and arts educator. Their practice involves mark-making, experimental video installation, and sculpture.

  Book Circus opened in 1960 and with the very cruisy Vaseline Alley behind the store quickly became the epicenter of the gay community at that time. In 1980 and through the AIDS crises it became the iconic Circus of Books, WeHo's version of Stonewall. In 2020 it has been reimagined and reopened with the addition of Circus of Books West. Both Stores also feature The Gallery @ Circus, an upscale gallery representing LGBTQ+ artists.
